Today, California lawmakers will vote on the latest state budget proposal which falls far short of what we have been demanding. This budget sends an insulting message to family child care providers: while offering most educators in California a 4.31% cost of living adjustment (COLA), legislators have set aside only a 2% increase for child care providers. With inflation running at a 3.6% rate this year, this is essentially a pay cut.
But there’s still time for us to fight, and our experience in years past teaches us that when we fight, we can win. We refuse to let the state legislature devalue or work by offering us half the increase other educators are receiving. Over the next few days, we’ll be making phone calls to different key decision-makers and demanding that they stand with child care providers, starting right now.
Today, we need every child care provider in the state to call Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas and tell his office loud and clear that we won’t settle for anything less than the 4.31% our peers are receiving under this budget proposal.
Visit www.ccpu.click/callrivas to make a one minute phone call to his office right now.
Input your phone number and information then tap “click here to make a call.” A short script will appear on your screen, and another button that will connect you to the Speaker’s office. After you click that button, you will receive a phone call that will connect you to the office of Speaker Rivas once answering. You can then read from the script if someone answers or leave a message. Then, share this link with everyone in your network!
Over the past two weeks, providers, parents, and allies have made sure lawmakers hear our voices. We lined the sidewalks between legislative offices and the Capitol to speak directly with elected officials, hosted a candlelight vigil highlighting the essential role family child care plays in our communities, and along with Parent Voices, marched with a drum line through the Capitol grounds to lawmakers’ offices to make sure they heard our demands loud and clear.
This week is critical. Be sure you make your call to Assembly Speaker Rivas today, and be ready each of the next few days to call other lawmakers. We’ll also be mobilizing both in Sacramento and key legislative districts around the state to make sure California’s leaders get the message: they need to fund child care like California depends on it—because it does.
