On January 11, child care providers resumed bargaining with the state of California. We started the year strong, bringing critical proposals to the table that address the real needs of providers and the families we serve.
True Cost of Care
The state had an entire month to review our true cost of care proposal. And what did they come back with? Nothing! Just questions about what “true cost of care” means.
Let’s be clear: true cost of care means paying providers what it actually costs to deliver quality care while sustaining our livelihoods. It ensures we can keep our doors open in a profession we love. The state must stop stalling. We demand new bargaining dates by Monday, January 13!
Ensuring Quality Care for All Children
That same day, our bargaining team presented a proposal addressing the state’s “suspension and expulsion” policies for children in the Family Child Care Home Education Network (FCCHEN) programs.
We were clear: every child deserves quality care, including those with special needs or behavioral challenges. Our proposal calls for:
- Training: Necessary resources to equip providers.
- Timely Support: Timely access to social workers, case managers, therapists, and other professionals.
- Fair Pay: Additional compensation for providers caring for children with greater needs.
Under the law, suspension and expulsion policies took effect on January 1 for FCCHEN program providers, but the state failed to negotiate these changes with CCPU, as required by our contract. We filed unfair practice charges last year, and our new proposal ensures providers have the voice and resources needed to create a safe and nurturing environment for all children.
