SACRAMENTO, CA – Following public threats from the Trump Administration to federal child care funding stabilization policies including payment by certified need, and the ongoing harassment to providers of Somali descent in Minnesota and beyond, Child Care Providers United (CCPU) – the union representing more than 70,000 family child care providers in California – released the following statement from Max Arias, CCPU Chairperson:
“These threats need to be called out for what they are: direct threats on working families of all backgrounds who rely on access to quality, affordable child care in their communities to go to work every day supporting, and growing our economy. Funding freezes, even when intended to be temporary, will be devastating – resulting in families losing access to care and working parents facing the devastating choice of keeping their children safe or paying their bills. Sudden changes to child care access caused by freezes have the potential to ravage our economy and force employers to face unpredictable workforce shortages.
“Payment by certified need is critical to keeping providers’ doors open and is enshrined in our contract with strong support from Governor Newsom and legislative leaders. Even with these current policies, providers are only taking home $7 per hour on average and are barely able to keep their doors open. When something as small as a child getting sick can leave a provider forced to shutter their doors, it threatens access to care for all families in the community and leaves young learners without access to critical early learning.
“And the rhetoric used by the Trump Administration has led to direct threats to the safety of providers and the children they care for, something we’ve unfortunately seen in Minnesota and Washington and, now, right here in California.
“We stand united with Governor Newsom and legislative leaders in fighting to ensure that California families do not lose access to care based on bigoted threats from Trump and his cronies, and that all providers and the children they care for remain safe. And we will continue to fight for the protections for providers and the families they serve that we’ve won in our contracts; we are stronger in unity.
“We join our fellow providers, working families, and leaders across the country in hoping none of these threats are realized.”
