The Trump administration has issued a series of memos and executive orders about federal funding this week. One of the memos ordered federal departments and agencies to freeze federal funding for hundreds of programs that serve children and families.
On Tuesday, several states, including California, sued the president to stop this harmful freeze on funds. A judge temporarily halted implementation of the freeze because the president doesn’t have the right to cut funding for programs that Congress has already approved. After the judge made his decision, President Trump rescinded the memo.
The president has said that he still intends to freeze programs, but he has not said which ones, when he would do it, and for how long. No further details have been made available.
Our union is working with our nationwide allies to understand what this means for child care providers and to keep you updated as we learn more about potential impacts to our members and the families you serve.
This isn’t the first attack on us and the working families in our communities, and it won’t be the last. We will continue to stand with allies here in California and nationally to ensure all children have access to quality, affordable child care, and providers have the resources they need to provide this care and support their own families. We will work with partners to ensure our communities have what they need to thrive.
The news this week has been scary and confusing. But CCPU providers, organizing with families and allies, will continue to build on the successes we had under several presidential administrations, when providers passed legislation and voted for our union along with other historic gains for our industry. We remain focused and committed to achieving our goal of funding and implementing the true cost of care, prospective pay, and other improvements providers and families urgently need in our state.
