Home based child care can be a 24/7 job. It is for me at least. The families who come to me don’t work typical 9 to 5 office jobs. Instead they’re nurses, janitors, and law enforcement. They work over nights, early mornings and swing shifts. Throughout it all, my staff and I are here to ensure their children are safe, educated and cared for while their parents are away.
But it isn’t easy. And it’s becoming increasingly difficult. My employees love the kids we care for, but they have to support themselves as well. And it’s hard to compete when the nearby fast food restaurant is paying $20 an hour and I can barely keep up with inflation and the rising cost of living. ALL workers deserve pay that reflects the dignity of work – I’m glad to see other workforces get that recognition but I’m barely paying myself while making sure my employees can at least scrape by even when I can’t.
And I’m not just covering basic business expenses. It’s not unusual for me to offer my parents a ride to work, help with an unexpected expense or even keep a child for an extended period of time when things get really rough. I do it because I love the children and families I work with. I love my job. I just wish it felt like the state loved me and my fellow providers a bit more in return.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, childcare providers were seen as essential workers. We worked to keep our doors open and our lights on when everyone else was shutting down. But five years later, we’re back to being overlooked and undervalued, even though the circumstances are basically the same. We still support the families that keep our state running. Nurses can’t show up to their shifts if there’s no one available to tuck their kids in at night. Cops can’t keep our streets safe if they have to call out to make sure there’s someone looking after their children. We are essential spokes in the wheels that allow our society to operate. Without us, everything falls apart.
That’s why it’s imperative the state step up in the coming budget cycle and make sure family child care providers receive fair pay for the quality care we provide round-the-clock. Childcare providers like me keep California working and it’s time that fact was acknowledged and respected.
