My passion for my job is what keeps me going. It helps me get out of bed at 4 am to welcome my first family, and continue running until midnight to care for children whose parents work late. During ten years of providing home-based child care in Palmdale, I’ve supported the families of bus drivers and pizza delivery people. I’ve cared for children while their parents struggled to find work and celebrated with them when they did. I’ve watched parents go back to school, excel in their own careers and, in one case, even buy a house! I love my job, the children I care for and the families I help support.
And yet, there’s a financial reality that can’t be denied. Child care providers in California are simply not paid enough. After ten years, I still rely on my husband’s income to pay all the bills. No matter how much I want to, I can’t afford to increase pay for my staff or offer them benefits. And while the kids we look after receive excellent care, they miss out on opportunities too. Higher reimbursement rates from the state would allow me to introduce children to more types of food and improve the quality of materials I use to teach.
The work my staff and I do every day has a consistent, significant, positive impact on the lives of the families I serve. I help them to achieve their economic and educational goals. It’s time the state steps up and helps me achieve mine as well.
